Police trace copper thieves via dropped cellphone

One of the suspects dropped his phone on the scene and detectives traced and arrested six suspects

A steel and copper manufacturing company in Sebenza was robbed by six armed suspects of an estimated R1.2-million worth of equipment and material on August 18.

The incident happened at 10.30pm when the nightshift staff were held at gunpoint while the suspects loaded the stolen property into one of the business’s vehicles.

The company has requested not to be named.

“When the suspects drove away, one of them dropped their cellphone and it was taken for further investigation. Detectives traced the six suspects with the help of service providers and two suspects were arrested in Primrose and the other four was arrested in Johannesburg CBD on September 4 by Det Const Sabelo Nkosi and his team from Sebenza,” said Sharon Tsotsotso, spokesman for Sebenza SAPS.

Some of the stolen materials were recovered at a scrapyard in Johannesburg.

The six suspects, Thembinkosi Sambo (42), Eric Kazungu (37), Terrence Man Beng (26), Tom Booi (42), Mxebisi Ntekiso (44) and Senzeni Phandela (32) had their first appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday morning on charges of business robbery and possession of stolen property.
