The stop-and search-operation was a part of the police's efforts to create visibility around Kempton

ALMOST 2500 counterfeit DVDs were confiscated by officials at the Kempton Park Taxi Rank on Pretoria Road on Wednesday.

The stop-and-search operation was conducted by Kempton SAPS, EMPD and the Gauteng Traffic Department as part of an effort to create more visibility around the Kempton CBD area.

Led by Kempton Park Police Station commander, Brig Bertha Kgoroba, the operation started at about 10am and police officials conducted searches until 6pm.

During a short briefing at Barnard Stadium before the procedures began, Kgoroba explained the operation was crime prevention related and aimed to reduce the crime around Kempton.

Police and metro officials were instructed to track down anyone with drugs, unlicensed firearms and counterfeit goods.

The members started off by searching the taxi rank where they found about 2499 counterfeit DVD discs, sold by different people at various vendor stands around the rank.

Some of the vendors had disappeared by the time police came around to their stands, leaving their goods behind, probably after receiving a tip-off from others.

Dagga was also found at one of the stands selling fake discs.

“Police arrested five suspects for possession of stolen goods such as laptops and cellphones on West Street and two illegal immigrants were apprehended,” police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said.

One arrest was also made for possession of dagga.
