Three men miss their flights because of speeding

Eight drivers were arrested for clocking speeds of between 197 and 164km/h in this 120km/h zone

THREE motorists, claiming they were late for their flights, were arrested for speeding on the R21 on Sunday morning.

A 38-year-old man in a VW sedan was arrested at 7.54am when he clocked 197km/h. At 6.14am, on the same stretch of the freeway, a 62-yearr-old man in a Mercedes Benz sedan registered

196km/h. The third highest speed was by a 43-year-old man driving a Mercedes Benz sedan. All three cited the reason that they were late for a plane at OR Tambo Airport.

Metro police spokesman, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, said this stretch of the R21 at the R562 was notorious for horrific accidents, mostly involving single vehicle accidents attributed to non-compliance with the speed limit.

The speed law enforcement operation took place from 5.30am and 9am and eight drivers were arrested for clocking speeds of between 197 and 164km/h in this 120km/h zone. Charges of reckless and negligent driving were laid against the drivers at Olifantsfontein Police Station.

All eight arrested drivers were released after posting bail of R1 000.
