Community supports local talent at Allen Glen market
Allen Grove and nearby areas gathered at Allen Glen shopping centre for a market.
Market-goers, food lovers and art enthusiasts gathered at Allen Glen Shopping Centre on May 9 for a community market filled with handmade goods, tasty treats and locally produced items.
Visitors had the opportunity to browse a variety of stalls featuring homemade cookies and rusks, jam tarts, sausage rolls, pancakes, mini cookies, curry and rice, boerewors rolls, crafts, plants and jewellery.
Local business owners used the market as an opportunity to showcase their products to the community and received encouraging support from attendees throughout the day.

Jason Lohrentz said he attended the market hoping to experience something different in the area.
“I attended because I wanted to see something different, especially in the area. We have seen a few markets around, but it’s nice to see things like this pop up. It is good for the community,” he said.
“I was hoping to see some new things on sale, so my expectations were not entirely met.
“I would like to see more locally produced items where people have brought something unique and added their own touch. What I don’t really like to see is too many of the same items, but the market isn’t bad.”
Despite the cold weather, residents still came out to enjoy the atmosphere, sample food and support local vendors.
While foot traffic was relatively quiet at times, vendors and visitors alike described the experience as enjoyable and positive.
Among the stalls bringing something different to the market were Elbie and Nico Kritzinger, who combined sweet and salty flavours by mixing popcorn with sweets to create a unique snack option for customers.
The idea drew interest from visitors and gave vendors hope for continued support as the market grows.

“We are trying to assist in the community where we can, so whenever there is a local market, we try to attend,” said Nico Kritzinger.
“So far, things are a bit quiet as it is winter time and people are scared to come outside. It’s an upcoming market. People are coming out, expectations are being met, and we are doing quite well for the day.”
