‘Explosions’: Technicians assess damage caused this morning

Metro confirms the outage is due to cable theft

Ekurhuleni Metro has confirmed that cable theft, which resulted in the burning of substations, is the reason for the current power outage in some suburbs.

“Ekurhuleni technicians are currently on site investigating the severity of the damages before commencing with repair works,” metro spokesman, Themba Gadebe, said in a short statement issued just before 11am today.

According to the metro areas affected are Birch Acres, Van Riebeeck Park and Edleen.  Gadebe made no mention of how long it would take to restore power to these areas.

Reports on social media indicate that power has been restored to some areas.

“The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wishes to inform residents and businesses that it is aware of the power supply interruption affecting parts of Kempton Park. We wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused and remind consumers to treat the network as electrically live at all times,” Gadebe said.
