Ekurhuleni Metro has allocated R250 000 for emergency maintenance of the bunny park in Benoni.
According to a post on Ban Animal Trading (BAN) SA’s Facebook page, Jaco Burger of the metro’s parks department has been appointed to oversee the running of the park.
This follows a meeting BAN and the Bunny Park Animals 911 Group had with Dr Victor Nesengani, Ekurhuleni’s director of parks and cemeteries.

Burger was instructed by Nesengani to attend to the following with immediate effect:
1. All the farm animals at the bunny park have to be correctly recorded. The bunnies, due to the numbers and burrows, will be strictly monitored.
2. The feeding schedules of all the animals, according to their dietary needs, must be addressed immediately.
3. All boreholes will be repaired and immediately restored to full working order.
4. All dams must be dredged and all overflows and inlets must be cleared of debris. Ekurhuleni engineers have been instructed to assist with this.
5. All waterways must be cleared of debris.
6. Contractors are on site and more will be appointed within the next few days to complete the emergency work.
7. A new camp will be built for the goats.
8. All concrete water troughs will be demolished and new JoJo water tanks have been ordered and will be installed immediately.
9. No rabbits will be euthanased and the media report by Themba Gadebe is categorically denied.
10. Compliance certificates will be insisted on from all parties who offer services at the bunny park.
Nensengane is looking forward to a working relationship with Ban Animal Trading and the 911 group and a partnership is what is planned for the future of the bunny park. Ban Animal Trading & the Bunny Park 911 Group are happy to see that progress is happening and we look forward to a working relationship that will consider the rights and welfare of all the animals at the park.
