Most of Kempton left without power for three hours

The reason for the blackout is still not clear

MANY residents are still in the dark this morning about why they were left in the dark for at least three hours on Wednesday night.

The electricity in many suburbs all over town went out at 8pm last night, sparking lots of activity on social media as residents tried to find out what was going on.

But not with a lot of luck. Guesses ranged from alien invasions to load shedding to wet cables.

Ward councillor Jaco Terblanche told Kempton Express this morning the blackout was the result of a cable fault.

Until now Ekurhuleni Metro has been mum on the incident. Express is awaiting comment from them.

“The electricity department checked substations around Kempton and discovered that a KV66 cable, one of the main cables responsible for the supply of power, was down. By midnight everything was back to normal,” Terblanche explained on Thursday morning.

One of the posts doing the rounds last night read: “Please be patient as we are trying to get to the bottom of the power outage. Parts of Kempton Park, Bonaero Park, Pomona and Glen Erasmia have been reported on the groups so far. EMM is sending technical team out to investigate. City of Ekurhuleni acknowledges your Service Request. Your Reference Number is 1694846.”

Another post suggested that the problem was at the main transformer and technicians were trying to ring feed it. A later update suggested a cable blew in the Van Riebeeck Park area. “They are currently tracing where it blew and will repair immediately.”

It was further reported there was a problem at a Birch Acres substation.
Wednesday evening’s outage was for many residents the second one this week, as they were also left without electricity on Monday evening.
Express will update residents as soon as we have had a reply from the metro.
