The intersection is still closed

Contractors are hard at work on Monument Road trying to fix a burst pipe.

A section of the road was damaged this morning when a water pipe burst underneath the road surface.

When Express visited the scene at 2pm today a large section of the road had been dug up to get to the damaged pipe. Workers were also pumping water from the large hole.

A huge thunderstorm which came down shortly afterwards would certainly hamper repairs.

The whole intersection of Monument Road and Commissioner Street is still closed to traffic. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, said Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s technicians, together with Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services officials, were currently on site draining water from a burst water pipe so as to begin with repair work.

“In the early hours of this morning, a 225m asbestos water pipe, supplying water to Kempton Park Extensions 3, 4 and 5, as well as Glen Marais, burst, tearing into the road, leaving a 1.5 meter deep hole at the corner of Commissioner and Monument Roads.

“Due to the extent of the work on site, water supply to the affected areas will be interrupted for the duration of the repair works.

“Work to repair the damaged road will commence upon completion of the burst pipe repairs. The road will remain closed until repair work is completed,” Gadebe said.
