Ekurhuleni in top three as far as water losses are concerned

Ekurhuleni has not yet introduced the telemetry system, according to the DA

EKURHULENI Metro is third on the list for the most water lost by municipalities in Gauteng from July 2014 to June 2015.

The City of Tshwane lost 87 931 618 000kl, followed by the City of Joburg on 128 300 3000kl (unaudited figure) and the City of Ekurhuleni on 117 165 450kl.

These three metros collectively lost over 88 billion kilolitres of water, which is enough to fill 35 000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Fred Nel, MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance, obtained this information from MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo, in reply to questions asked in the Gauteng Legislature.

These water losses were largely due to flaws in metering and billing systems, data errors (meter reading) and real losses (leaks and reservoir overflows).

Measures in place to reduce these losses are pressure management, metering of unmetered areas, replacement of old meters, water leaks reported to call centres and the telemetry system to monitor flows and reservoir levels.

Ekurhuleni has not yet introduced the telemetry system, according to the DA.

Ekurhuleni will fork out nearly R2 million over the next three years to replace old pipes to curb losses due to bursts in asbestos pipes.

According to Mamabolo Gauteng has sufficient water for 2016/2017. He said all municipalities in Gauteng are supplied with bulk potable water by Rand Water.
