AN off duty security officer used his private vehicle to push fleeing thieves off the road near Chloorkop and also apprehended one, all by himself, on Sunday.
The whole drama started at 4am at an Edleen residence.
Lizette Venter said their alarm went off at about 4am.

“We realised two scooters and a motorcycle had been stolen. After about five minutes ADT officer, John Mafiri, arrived at our home but there was no sign of the suspects,” she said.
An hour later the family received a phone call from Mafiri, who said he saw three or four men loading a scooter and a motorbike onto a white Nissan bakkie at Barnard Stadium.
At the time he had gone off duty and was on his way home.
Venter said Mafiri chased the men all the way to Chloorkop where, without any hesitation, he pushed the Nissan bakkie off the road with his own private vehicle.
The motorcycle and scooter were on the back of the bakkie.
“He caught one of the suspects in the bakkie but the rest fled. The police arrived after he had called them as well as my father, Nico.
“Later on my dad and cousins went to the spot where John described that he had seen them loading the stuff. We found the other scooter hidden in a field at Barnard Stadium,” Venter said.
“We would like security officer John Mafiri to know he did an outstanding job handling the situation. He has helped out our family tremendously with the stolen motorcycle and scooters he recovered. We really appreciate everything he did. We just wanted to say thank you, John, and a good job.”
