Two men, aged between 29 and 30, were attacked and killed on January 30 by the community of Winnie Mandela.
“It is alleged by an eyewitness that the two were playing dice outside a tavern. They started intimidating patrons with a firearm,” said Constable Patricia Mgijima.
She said the people at the tavern became angry and started assaulting the pair with stones.
“One of the men died at the scene and the other was taken to Tembisa Hospital, where he later died.”
It is believed the deceased were members of a gang.
Constable Mgijima said the community then started to hunt down other people who were accused of being the part of the gang, burning their belongings.
“A man who is a painter and one woman who was accused of being a gang member’s girlfriend, were both rescued by the police.”
The SAPS managed to calm the situation.
“Community members are urged to not take the law into their own hands. Instead, crime should be reported to 08600 10111 or on the toll-free line 112,” said Constable Mgijima
A case of murder was opened at the Tembisa SAPS and investigations are underway.
