A woman’s driver’s licence, which was “lost” by the metro police at a road block, mysteriously turned up at Norkem Park Police Station a week later.
“The uncanny thing is, how did my licence appear there and the other owner, whose licence I was given, is now looking for his licence?” the woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, asked.
According to her, she was stopped at a huge road block on the P91 between Mooirivier and Mooifontein streets at 10.30am on January 30.

“I (white female) was pulled over and gave my driver’s licence to Officer M Januarie from the EMPD, who went to the van where they were checking the licences. On his return I took my licence and as I was putting it back into my purse, I noticed the photograph was that of a black man.
“I immediately confronted the officer and told him this was not my licence. I got out and went to the van but my licence was gone. They were not bothered. He said, don’t worry, they would bring it back and he would call me.”
She also gave back the wrong licence.
However, nothing was returned. At the time she wanted to know who would cover the cost of a new driver’s licence, which she only renewed last year.
On Saturday, February 6 at 7.30am, she received a call from Norkem Park SAPS saying she had left her licence on the counter after it was taken by the EMPD at a road block.
“I went to fetch my licence and was told it was left on their counter. The police did not know where it came from.”
The police again called her on Wednesday, February 10, saying the other person was now at the police station looking for his licence.
Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said: “The commander of the roadblock on the said day is investigating as to how the mix-up happened so as to ensure that officers work systematically and meticulously to avert such a terrible occurrence in future big roadblocks.
“The EMPD wishes to apologise profusely to the concerned motorist for the mishap and promises that it will not happen again.”
