A newborn abandoned baby was discovered alive in an open veld near the Pinedine Train Station.
The baby died a day later in hospital.
The baby was found on Monday morning after the Olifantsfontein SAPS received a tip-off about the abandoned child.
The Olifantsfonetin SAPS communications officer, Constable Mokete Serakwana, said the baby boy was full-term and had his placenta and umbilical cord still attached.
“He was wrapped in a towel and placed on a piece of mat which had blood stains. Members of the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services were called to the scene. They confirmed that the child was still alive and rushed him to hospital. It was unfortunate that the following day we were informed that the infant had died in hospital,” said Const Serakwana.
Constable Serakwana said the SAPS is still searching for the mother of the newborn baby.
“We are appealing for any information that could help lead to the arrest of the suspect. People are urged to report any suspicious woman who was pregnant and suddenly there is no child. A case of concealment of birth was registered,” said Const Serakwana.
