A security officer was hijacked and his firearm stolen in Olifantsfontein on Thursday afternoon.
Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said the incident happened at 1pm.
His Toyota Yaris patrol vehicle was found abandoned at 6pm in Winnie Mandela in Tembisa. The victim works for BhekaniAbantu Security Company.
The firearm taken from the officer is a Norinco 9mm pistol. Fortunately, the officer was unharmed.
Kgasago said two members of the EMPD loss control unit joined BhekaniAbantu officers at 5.45pm when word was received that the vehicle was sighted at Winnie Mandela settlement. Investigations revealed the vehicle was abandoned at 2pm along Mathebula Street.
In-depth investigations are underway to bring to book the culprits responsible for the hijacking and robbery, Kgasago said.
