THE unwelcome eyesore of illegal posters and adverts polluting Ekurhuleni was tackled on Tuesday, February 24, in a joint operation comprising the EMPD, JMPD, TMPD and Mogale City By-Laws Units.
The special operation commenced at 8.30am and concluded at 2.30pm.
During this time more than 180 illegal posters and adverts were removed in Kempton Park, Boksburg and Benoni, said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman.
These included mobile trailer advertisements.
Motor dealers displaying vehicles beyond their premises were fined and given written warnings.
Businesses are urged to ensure they apply for stickers from council to attach to their adverts, to avoid removal.
”Indiscriminately placing adverts on traffic lights or lampposts, or pinning them into the ground at intersections, will have expensive repercussions,” Kgasago warned.
“Individuals and businesses have made it a free for all affair by placing adverts anywhere they wish.
”Trailers with adverts are placed at intersections without council approval and motor dealers display vehicles on sidewalks and obstruct pedestrians, who are compelled to encroach onto the roadway.”
Three motor dealers were issued with fines of R500, while owners of trailer adverts were called and instructed to remove their trailers within seven days. Failure to comply with this order will result in the trailers being confiscated.
