Career expo enlightens pupils and youth
"The expo provided students with a platform that allows them to connect with various FET colleges, universities, cooperate entities and financial aid."
Local high school pupils and unemployed youngsters flocked to the Rabie Ridge Hall on Thursday last week, during the After Matric What’s Next National Career Expo.
The expo held its fifth and biggest annual township career expo, which was aimed at attracting an audience of high school pupils, unemployed youth, emerging entrepreneurs and students actively seeking advice and information about all aspects of tertiary education and career development.
The expo took place over two days, from Thursday to Friday last week.
The marketing director for the event, Mr Sammy Mokgoatsane, said the career expo helps to reduce the number of university drop-outs and high unemployment rate in South Africa.
“The expo provided students with a platform that allows them to connect with various FET colleges, universities, cooperate entities and financial aid. It is a great opportunity for all those aspiring to have some level of formal education, to meet and interact with the exhibitors.
“It also allowed the students to ask questions that will provide them with some insight into their careers choice,” said Mr Mokgoatsane.
Mr Mokgoatsane said they are aiming to give prospective students an opportunity to look at the different universities available and to choose the one which resonates with them.
“This career expo is one of the few free career exhibitions done in townships around South Africa,” said Mr Mokgoatsane.
The project manager, Ms Nonhlahla Maseko, said the expo attracted more than 5 000 students and youngsters in two days, supplied by 20 exhibitors.
“Unemployed young people managed to drop off their CVs with various organisations. We are hoping the career expo was useful to all the pupils and residents,” Ms Maseko said.
