Parents urged to be involved in their children’s education

"We value all what is noble and our friendship and unity are invaluable. All of us must be guided by values and principles as our master plan for 2016 and beyond. Parents' support to our school is crucial," added Ms Laka.

Glen Austin High School management said parents’ involvement in the education of their children is vital.

Glen Austin High School, which is located in Midrand, held its open assembly on the school grounds on February 19.

Addressing parents, the Grade 8 and Grade 11 pupils in a packed tent, Ms Mawenda, while delivering her motivational talk, advised pupils that they must take charge of their life.

“Without character you may not sustain your success,” Ms Mawenda said.

Echoing the same sentiments was the Glen Austin High CEO Shadi Laka, who said their school motto carries these inspiring words: “Freedom Through Knowledge”, which translates into their commitment as a school to produce young adults who are independent thinkers.

“We value all that is noble and our friendship and unity are invaluable. All of us must be guided by the values and principles as our master plan for 2016 and beyond. Parents’ support of our school is crucial,” said Ms Laka.

To encourage the pupils, Ms Laka quoted the famous phrase of the late Tata Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Mark Ndlovu, a Grade 11 pupil who was elected as the president of the Learners Representative Council (LRC), in his welcoming words to his fellow pupils said, “You must be a visionary to lead the people or a group.”

The legendary Mr Don Laka joined the school choir on stage. They sang the song he had composed and written for the school.

The school principal, Mr Abbott, announced that Glen Austin High would be introducing the Grade 12 class in 2017.
