Speed junkies arrested on Zuurfontein Road

All the arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Sebenza Police Station

A speed law enforcement operation conducted on Zuurfontein Road on Sunday morning between 7am and 10am yielded five arrests and nine other motorists were fined for not complying with the 80km/h speed limit on this stretch of road.

A 34-year-old male driver in a BMW sedan was clocked at 154km/h, claiming to be rushing to a hospital. He was locked up at 9.20am, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

At 7.32am, a 45-year-old male driving a Toyota minibus was arrested when he registered 126km/h, advancing the reason that an alarm had gone off at his house. The third highest speedster arrested registered a speed of 122km/h. The 26-year-old man was driving a Datsun sedan, saying he was rushing to a train station. He was nabbed at 7.45am.

Caught travelling at 114km/h, a 35-year-old female driver in a Hyundai sedan was arrested at 8am, stating she was late for work. The fifth driver arrested was a 27-year-old taxi driver clocked at 113km/h. He said he was rushing to Kimberley.

All the arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Sebenza Police Station and later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.
