Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members arrested two suspects, recovered drugs and a motor vehicle between August 19 and 23.

On August 19, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested at around 14:00 after being found in possession of five packets of crystal methamphetamine in Kaalfontein Extension 2, Ivory Park.

In a separate incident on August 23 at around 11:00, members received information from The Animal Guardians (TAG).

Media liaison Warrant Officer Grant Giblin said the information led them to an address in Lekala Street, Chief Albert Luthuli, Crystal Park, where they were looking for a suspect who allegedly committed acts of animal abuse.

The alleged suspect fled upon their arrival, leaving an open shack from which an awful smell was emanating.

Giblin said that, upon investigation, members were horrified to find the bodies of three dogs in various states of decomposition under the suspect’s mattress.

According to Giblin, it was evident that two of the dogs had their throats slit, while one, a female, had a large amount of blood around the genital area. The third body was severely decomposed.

He said TAG arranged for the disposal of the dogs, while members followed up with Crystal Park SAPS regarding an alleged case the SPCA had opened the previous week involving similar acts against a cat, chicken and dog.

At around 15:00, the responding members were contacted by the SPCA for further information regarding the wanted suspect.

Giblin said that, on arrival at the above address, the suspect was again not present. However, members were informed that he was nearby on foot with a new dog.

With the help of SPCA personnel, the 29-year-old suspect was quickly traced and arrested while walking nearby with the dog.

The dog was found to be in good health and was rescued by the SPCA. BFS members charged the suspect in accordance with the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962, while six hacksaw blades, possibly linked to the alleged mutilations, were booked in as exhibits.

In further policing operations on the same day, a silver Renault Kwid reported hijacked in an Ivory Park case was recovered in Flashlight Fish Street, Kaalfontein, Ivory Park.

Investigations into the cases continue.

The suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrates’ courts, facing charges of possession of drugs and cruelty to animals.
