Fighting six-year-old undergoes major operation to save her
Chadé hopes to be out of hospital and back home by next week
ALTHOUGH still critical and in much pain, Chadé van Niekerk (6) is still fighting for her life after a risky operation on Monday.
The Grade One learner from Laerskool Birchleigh, who was diagnosed with hollow visceral myopathy in May last year, currently weighs 11.24kg and is being treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

“Chadé’s colon has no more functionality and her small intestine (ileum) is now tied to her stomach to let the colon rest. She was very scared and just kept on telling her mommy that. My child was in a state. I have no more words. We just ask the community and everyone who reads this that they keep on praying for our little angel,” said Chadé’s grandmother, Fransie Diedericks.
Chadé was in surgery for three hours and received a colostomy bag which was brought out through an opening made in the abdomen wall. The edges of the bowel were stitched to the skin allowing stool to drain into the bag.
She was transferred from the high care unit on Wednesday afternoon to a general ward for further observation.
“She will be able to take in fluids and later on we will gradually give her soft foods until she can eat normal again. Our little angel is very strong and we are so proud of the little fighter she is,” said Diedericks.
Chadé hopes to be out of hospital and back home by next week.
A post on Chadé’s Facebook page on March 16, ‘Gebed vir Chade’, read: “Chadé het gister twee keer uit die bed geklim en geloop. Sy slaap nog baie en is in baie pyn.”
