Off-duty Benoni policeman killed by hijackers

His was on his way home when a spotted a suspicious vehicle

A Benoni police officer, W/O Morne Reyneke, died in hospital after being shot in the chest by alleged hijackers in Brakpan on Friday afternoon, the Hawks said.

Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the officer had just knocked off and was on his way home when he noticed an SUV travelling recklessly near the R554 and R23 road intersection in Brakpan.

He managed to get the car to stop and was walking towards it when the occupants shot him.. The occupants of the SUV jumped out and got into another vehicle.

The officer was critically injured. He was treated at the scene by ER 24 paramedics before being airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The SUV had been hijacked in Brakpan earlier in the day.

The suspects are still at large.

“We will not sleep until we find the people responsible,” Mulaudzi said.
