THE Riverfields development in Kempton Park is underway and has already had R2-billion invested in it.
This was announced at the recent City Meets Business meeting on March 8 at the civic centre in Kempton.
The business breakfast was held by the city so it could present its Strategic Urban Development Plan to business stakeholders.
Ekurhuleni’s Strategic Urban Development (SUD) plan is a large-scale strategy that guides development in the metro as envisaged in the Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) 2055, Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Metropolitan Spatial Development Framework (MSDF) and Capital Investment Framework (CIF).

“The roll-out of the city’s urban development plans is aimed at encouraging local industrialists to get involved in the various developments of the City and to contribute meaningfully to the greater provincial economic spectrum by participating in building the economy and ultimately attract foreign investment,” Pieter Swanepoel, divisional head for special projects in Ekurhuleni’s City Planning Department, said at the breakfast.
The metro has 10 key proposed priority developments that are critical to advancing the municipality’s goal of implementing its strategic urban development plans. These include the Riverfields development, Lord’s View along Allandale Road just past Chloorkop and Twenty-One Industrial Park on the east of the R21 in the Clayville area.
The other developments include the Prasa-Gibela train-manufacturing plant in Dunottar, the Tambo Springs Inland Port, Carnival Junction, Glen Gory, Farm Leeuwpoort, Green Reef, and S & J.
The Riverfields development is a mixed-use development strategically located on the portion of farm Witfontein 15-IR north-east of the existing Kempton Park CBD and the Albertina Sisulu Freeway (R21), situated between OR Tambo International Airport and Tshwane. It will be within close proximity to OR Tambo Airport and will be fully integrated with road, railway, bus, cycling and pedestrian systems.
So far, the phasing of Glen Erasmia Extension 29 is taking place, while the shopping centre for the same area has been approved. The 27ha Witfontein Ext 77 was approved in February and will function as an international logistics and distribution centre.
Plans to integrate Riverfields with Esselen Park are underway and the construction thereof needs to be escalated at provincial level. Construction at Plumbargo Park is also underway.
The Riverfields Boulevard Underpass, which runs below the R21 highway, has already been completed and opened in November last year.
Among other major advances the city is executing for the purpose of infrastructure development is the initial implementation phase of Twenty-One Industrial Park, a mixed-use development that will provide industrial, business, retail and residential opportunities.
The development is deemed as a catalyst for economic development and job creation within a strategic location adjacent to the Albertina Sisulu Corridor.
