Metro police blitz illegal Isando truck stop

During the blitz illegal structures were demolished and fines issued to truck drivers

AFTER a week of investigations the metro police blitzed an illegal truck stop on Tungsten and Power streets in Isando on March 16.

“Complaints were received that the illegal truck stop was rapidly growing into an illegal business area with illegal structures and hawkers selling food,” Lt-Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

“Claims that trucks were being repaired along the public road and that women of the night frequented the place were also investigated for a week by by-law unit members before blitzing the location,” he added.

During the blitz illegal structures were demolished and fines issued to truck drivers. The owner of a caravan was given a written warning, and an abandoned truck must be removed withing seven days.

“All the hawkers plying their trade were given stern written warnings not to trade at the location without permission,” Kgasago added.

“All the illegal activities at the location had to be halted as the place was slowly becoming an eyesore and a health hazard as there are no ablution facilities to cater for the truck drivers, hawkers and other patrons frequenting the place. The EMPD by-law unit will continue to closely monitor the area to ensure that illegal activities no longer take place,” Kgasago said.
