Security officer catches burglar

Following some basic steps can go a long way to protecting your home and family

THE quick response to a burglary in Pikkewyn Avenue in Birch Acres by an ADT reaction officer recently led to the successful apprehension and arrest of a suspect.

Officer Eric Nobaza responded to a silent alarm activation after a suspect gained access to the property through the main gate, which was unlocked. The suspect then broke into a storeroom by breaking the padlock off the steel door and proceeded to the main house, where he gained access by breaking a window with no burglar bars and started ransacking the house.

On arrival Nobaza saw the broken window and called for backup. At this point the suspect climbed through the window, trying to flee. Nobaza apprehended him and handed him over to Norkem Park SAPS. All stolen items were recovered.

Aslam Munsur, district community development manager of the area, commended the reaction officer for his swift action. “In many of the cases where a criminal has managed to enter a property, it is often due to some defect in the planning of the perimeter security.

“Following some basic steps can go a long way to protecting your home and family,” said Mansur.

He gave some additional security tips:

• Ensure that your gate is locked.

• Ensure the shrubs are trimmed around your driveway gate. All overgrowth and trees should be cut back to prevent criminals from utilising these to access your property by jumping over walls.

• Ensure that perimeter doors are fitted with adequate locks. The front door should have a safety chain or safety latch and, if the door has no vision panel, a door viewer.

• Ensure all windows are fitted with adequate locks or burglar bars that cover all glass.

• Install outside lights that can be remotely controlled from inside the house.

• If you note suspicious vehicles, individuals or groups in your neighbourhood, contact the police or your security company.

• Sleep with a panic button next to your bedside in case of emergency.
