Tembisa youngster helps those in need

With his determination and dedication, the project is currently catering to 23 disabled, 18 aged, 16 vulnerable children and five homeless people.

A young, ambitious and soft-spoken Mr Mzwakhe Mofolo (23) has devoted his life to helping the homeless, disabled, aged and needy people within Ivory Park.

Mr Mofolo founded a project called the Love of God Disability Foundation last year.

With his determination and dedication, the project is currently catering to 23 disabled, 18 aged, 16 vulnerable children and five homeless people.

Members of the organisation include Ms Agnes Mashao, Mr Thabiso Moyana, Mr Petrus Makola, Ms Kgopolo Mofolo and Mr Mzwakhe Mofolo.

“We are aimed to help those parents who give birth to disabled children – parents who are unable to go out and look for employment or run their own businesses. It was also meant for the disabled and elderly people who are left alone in households and who do not receive proper care on daily basis. These elderly people are the victims of criminals. There are a number of families suffering from extreme poverty,” said Mr Mofolo.

Mr Mofolo said they conduct door-to-door visits to disadvantaged families every Wednesday.

“We are appealing to the local youth to join the project. One hand cannot do all the work but with several people involved, we can reach new heights. Our aim is to exercise the love and care for all the people of God,” said Mr Mofolo.

The Love of God Disability Foundation is operating under the Ministry of Help in Community Worship Centre.

“When we started, we did some research in the community. The first people we met were the disabled people. They joined and came up with the name of the centre. This project does not have an owner but belongs to the community,” said Mr Mofolo.

He explained that they feed the people twice a day, every day – in the morning and at midday.

“They come at 8am and spend the day. They leave at 3pm. The feeding scheme relies on donations. Our biggest challenge is when we do not have any food at all. It is hard to sleep on an empty stomach. It hurts me when we have to stop them from coming to the centre because there is no food,” said Mr Mofolo.

He said their ward councillor gave them a space to operate from but there is no structure.

“We have been knocking on several doors for sponsorship but to no avail. We want to give the destitute people a home of warmth and comfort, a better life than being on the street searching for leftovers in dustbins.

“We are providing the necessary counselling every Tuesday and Thursday. We help people to read, write, count and solve problems. We are offering other skills programmes that will help empower them to become self employed,” said Mr Mofolo.

He appealed to the business people or any good Samaritans to donate towards the project.
