JUST IN: Zuma will pay back the money today
In a ruling by the Constitutional Court, Zuma was given just over three months to pay back the money for some of the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead but he has decided to speed up the process
THE president of South Africa, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, has announced that he will today pay R200 million back to the country.
Yesterday Pres Zuma was ordered by the Constitutional Court to pay back the money.
The Constitutional Court found that Pres Zuma had failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution as the supreme law of the land.
Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng said in the ruling on Thursday that the National Treasury should determine a “reasonable percentage”, which ought to be paid back personally by Pres Zuma.
The National Treasury was given 60 days to determine a reasonable amount for Pres Zuma to pay back, and then the president would have 45 days to pay the final amount.
However, in a turn of events, Pres Zuma has released a statement saying that he will today pay back R200 million of the R246 million that was spent on non-security features at his Nkandla home in KwaZulu-Natal.
Pres Zuma has decided that it is only fair and right that he give back a total sum of R200 million.
Opposition parties and many South Africans are in favour of this decision, a decision that comes as a shock to many.
