EMM responds to Sethokga Hostel saga

Sethokga Hostel residents handed over a memorandum and accused Clr Lesetja Mohlpamaswe of misconduct.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has responded to residents’ grievances following the hand-over of a memorandum to the council.

In its March 11 edition, The Tembisan reported that Sethokga Hostel residents handed over a memorandum and accused Clr Lesetja Mohlpamaswe of misconduct. Residents demanded that he step down and they objected to the “unexplained” demolition of the hostel.

Sethokga Hostel dwellers were expecting a response to their memorandum within 14 days from the day of the hand over.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said an advertisement regarding Sethokga Hostel was placed for the appointment of a contractor to construct units for the entire project, which includes the installation of engineering services, the installation of internal electrical infrastructure and demolishing.

“The demolishing and construction was done in phase 1A for the development of 240 units. While 222 units have been completed, there are 18 units still to be built,” said Mr Gadebe.

He said the construction work for Phase 1B will commence in the 2016/17 financial year, where 268 units will be built.

“The rental tariffs for Sethokga units have been submitted for approval by the EMM’s Mayoral Committee. The pre-screening of beneficiaries will be conducted by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements,” he said.
