According to his father, Gerhard, who arrived from New Zealand on Tuesday, his left femur, knee and ankle are broken and need immediate attention.

“Personnel only attended to the open wound on his knee on Tuesday after I had to speak to several people at the hospital. The wound is still open and they need to operate on his leg before it gets infected,” A distraught Botha told Express on Wednesday.

Doctors on Tuesday said he was top of the list to undergo surgery on Wednesday. However, came Wednesday he was told the theatres were full and the operation would not be done.

“My son is at high risk of losing his leg.”

Botha is now scheduled to be operated on this morning.
