Excavator stuck in vlei on Vlei Street for six hours

Traffic delays can be expected on Vlei Street with the heavy machinery operating on the road side

OPERATIONS to clear the low water bridge on Vlei Street came to an unexpected halt on Wednesday when an excavator got stuck in the sludge.

It took a six-hour battle to get the machine, which belongs to J & J Civil Engineering, out of the muddy mess. Luckily it sustained no damage.

A bigger excavator was used to pull it out.

Operations to clear the reeds at the bridge at Goodies for Gardens have been ongoing for some time.

Every time heavy rain falls, facilities at the business, as well as Vlei Street, are flooded because reeds prevent water from flowing underneath the low water bridge.

The operation will take about a month to finish and alternative ways to cut down the reeds and clean the vlei area will have to be discussed, the owner of J & J Civil Engineering said.

“We will have to go in from the other side of the road and maybe build floats for workers to stand on while cutting down the reeds.”
