Driver escapes death as bakkie flies off bridge
It is believed the bakkie collided with another vehicle which then fled the scene
THE driver of a white bakkie was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after his vehicle flew off a bridge and landed on the R24 East on Thursday morning.
The driver’s car went through the barrier of the Isando Bridge and fell onto the middle island of the freeway, landing on its roof.
“Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to reports of a vehicle that had overturned on the R24 at Barbara Road in Isando just before 7am on Thursday morning,” Max Cohen of Emer-G-med said.
According to Cohen, it is believed the bakkie collided with another vehicle on the bridge, pushing it off the bridge. The other vehicle is believed to have fled the scene.
“Fortunately, despite the crushed cabin, the driver escaped with only minor injuries. The patient was treated before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.”
Local authorities were on the scene to investigate the exact events leading up to the collision.
The incident caused heavy traffic delays on the freeway, affecting motorists travelling in both directions.
