Summit to empower farmers to be held at civic centre

All farmers and interested farmers are invited to attend

THE first All African Farmers’ Empowerment Operations Summit will be held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre from June 14 to June 18.

The five-day event will take place from 9am to 5pm daily.

According to the organiser, Dr Stout Peters the event will include high-level discussions on farmers’ credit administration, sustainability of the existing farms technology, worker ethics, the role of extension officers in farming, conservation agriculture, farm fires, finance, securing funding, farm workers, jobs and marketing, cash flow adaptations, families in farming business methodology, farming financial econometrics and other related matters.

Peters started farming in 2003 in Nigeria.

“My passion for farming started from a very young age. I remember when I was eight years old and the United Nations (UN) said they would be bringing food and water to Nigeria, I asked my father why we could not produce our own food. He answered and said that I would be one among millions to do this,” Peter shared.

“Since then it has been my mission and now my vision to empower farmers and to stop African poverty.”

With the summit, Peters said the main goal was to boost African farmers’ productivity, to play a role in solving the food crisis, to curb poverty, and to bring grants to farmers.

He pointed out that the first two legs of the summit would be in South Africa but it would also make its way around the world to other venues, including Dakota and Canada.

“Why South Africa? you may ask. Well we have a former leader in South Africa, Mandela. I share his total dream of being an altruist. I want to see the betterment of Africa’s welfare and to embrace her development. All this I want and nothing in return,” he pointed out.

The summit, he added, would direct all farmers on how to commence from simple seeds to global bounty with a combination of value-added agriculture, ingenuity, and conscience.

“Farmers will learn the A to Z of farming,” he added.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to give the welcoming address.

Other state presidents, dignitaries, company owners and CEOs are also expected to attend and address the summit.

Peters mentioned that Senzeni Zokwana, the minister of agriculture and fisheries, would be among the speakers.

n Who is eligible to attend?

All South African farmers, who will be requested to produce proof of this upon entry.

Non-farmers will have to pay a fee of R147.34 per day for the duration of the summit.
