Vehicles destroyed in taxi rank fire
The fire destroyed five vehicles and a tyre repair workshop.
Neighbours woke-up to a blazing fire at the Moriting taxi rank on Monday.
The fire destroyed five vehicles and a tyre repair workshop. The fire was extinguished by firefighters at about 3am.
People at the scene said community members had to break the windows of other vehicles that were kept there so that that they could save the vehicles from the raging flames.
The Midrand Taxi Association’s assistant transport manager, Mr S Nkomo, said the cause of the fire is not known at the moment.
“It could be someone who threw away a lit cigarette or someone who made a fire to warm themselves up. We don’t know what really happened,” said Mr Nkomo.
“Three of my cars were saved from the fire by the community who broke the windows to gain access and pushed them away,” said the Midrand Taxi Association’s transport manager, Mr Bennett Mlangeni.
Mr Nkomo said as an association they want to thank the community of Moriting and Phumasilwe for removing the vehicles from the scene of the fire.
