Pageant winner is an inspiration to others

"I learnt that in order to be successful one has to stand out from the crowd and market yourself, otherwise you will never be known."

Ms Mohau Matinketsa, who is the winner of the Miss Teen Tembisa Beauty Pageant Queen Title, is encouraging young girls to seek out opportunities that will improve their lives.

Ms Matinketsa, who is based in Tlamatlama Section, won the title in her first attempt in the modelling industry.

The reigning Miss Teen Tembisa was crowned by the second princess of 2014, Nomfundo Mqwati, at the Aviator Hotel on December 5 last year.

“I was hoping to win the title because I worked hard to be in the top 10. I love modelling as a hobby. My mother did not like me joining beauty pageants at first until she realised that modelling is something I enjoy and love. She supported me throughout the competition,” said Ms Matinketsa.

Ms Matinketsa (17) said she was inspired by the former 2014 Miss Teen Tembisa Beauty Pageant queen, Reabetswe Kgabane, who is currently a finalist in the Miss Teen Commonwealth competition.

“The competition was overwhelming, however I just believed in myself. I am aiming to enter and win more beauty pageants. I am also hoping to pursue other types of modelling,” said Ms Matinketsa.

A grade 12 pupil at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, Ms Matinketsa is encouraging young girls to go out and seek opportunities that will improve their lives.

Ms Matinketsa is more hands-on about community service projects, together with her crew at Siyaphumelela Youth Development Initiative.

“Since I have won the title I gained more self-confidence. I learnt that in order to be successful one has to stand out from the crowd and market yourself, otherwise you will never be known,” said Ms Matinketsa.

Her prizes for winning the title included a free bursary with MSC College, which she decided to offer to a needy student.

Ms Matinketsa aims to study a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Pretoria when she passes her matric.
