Steers customer nearly swallows piece of fork with his chips
'I was very nervous because I couldn't breath properly and started coughing'
A Steers customer questioned the quality of the chain’s plastic forks after he nearly swallowed a piece of the utensil with his chips.
A tooth of the fork broke off and nearly became lodged in Allan Horn’s throat at Steers in Festival Mall during his sit-down meal on April 20.
“I was on my lunch break, enjoying my Wacky Wednesday and chips, when I felt something scratch in my throat,” Horn said.
”I couldn’t breathe properly and started coughing. I coughed out a piece of purple plastic fork that had broken off in my chip.”

According to Horn, Festival Mall’s Steers was the only franchise that gave him a plastic knife and fork with a sit-down meal, when he expected aluminium cutlery.
“I would have understood if they gave me plastic cutlery for a take-away meal, but I was very unhappy and asked the manager why I was not getting real cutlery. She just said it came from head office and that they did not have any other.”
When Horn asked for head office’s number, he was given a brown paper take-away bag with the number on it and was only apologised to by the owner five days after the incident, after numerous phone calls and complaints.
“I just want to warn people to be careful with the plastic cutlery. What if that had happened to an elderly person? They could have choked to death.”
In a statement from Steers head office, they said, “Our customers are everything to us. So when a customer walks into any of our stores, we appreciate their patronage and it is our goal to always deliver a positive experience for them.
“We truly regret the unfortunate incident that took place at Steers Festival Mall. We are currently in the process of rolling out new crockery across our stores. We apologise sincerely to our customer for the incident and we look forward to giving all our customers a great experience.”
