Visitors enjoy tales and trails at Melville Koppies

Many visitors to Melville Koppies got a chance to do two events in one morning, all for the same price.

Visitors to Melville Koppies enjoyed a unique combination of storytelling and heritage exploration on June 14, with many taking advantage of two experiences for the price of one.

The morning began with storyteller Merle Grace captivating audiences with two tales: Busi the Bushbaby and the trickster story The Hare and the Buffalo.

Following the storytelling session, many visitors joined guided tours of the Koppies, led by knowledgeable guides.

One visitor remarked that they had learned a great deal during the experience.

The guided tour explored how people once lived and thrived on the Koppies, highlighting the ways in which they interacted with and utilised the natural environment.

Self-guided trails are clearly marked.

Visitors learned about iron-bearing rocks that were historically smelted to create metal tools and examined stone tools used by San hunter-gatherers.

They also viewed larger tools used by early humans to crush bones and extract nutritious marrow.

Melville Koppies is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30 and offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages.

Guests can explore the area independently on the 5km hiking trail or the 3km heritage trail, take part in a short scavenger hunt designed for children and adults alike, or simply relax on one of the benches or rocky viewpoints overlooking Johannesburg.
