Church packs food parcels
The parcels were then distributed to needy day care centres.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints teamed up with Stop Hunger now SA on May 7 to pack 20 000 food parcels in two hours.
The parcels were then distributed to needy day care centres and surrounding communities.
This is an annual event for the Mormon church.
Ms Marilyn Nhlapo said the initiative was successful and the community, organised by Selby Thekiso, manned up to lend a helping hand.
“We had a turn-out of 160 people. Stop Hunger now SA encourages more volunteers to take part in packing these food parcels to feed impoverished communities, which helps where relief is needed the most,” said Ms Nhlapo.
She said in the next venture they hope to pack more parcels in a shorter period of time.
“As a church, we approached the organisation and offered a helping hand because charity is at the centre of our service.”
“We have also partnered with Tembinkosi special school to do more Mormon Helping Hand Services, which take place every year. We encourage the community to join us in the services,” said Bishop Mishack Mathonsi.
The Leader of Mormon Helping Hand in Tembisa said the church would like to thank church members and the community at large for coming out to assist with the packing of the food parcels.
