THE metro police was joined by several Ekurhuleni Municipality departments in a special operation aimed at ensuring by-law compliance in the Kempton Park CBD.
The operation took place on Friday, May 13 between 2pm and 10pm. Illegal businesses, hawkers plying their trade without permits and obstructing pedestrian sidewalks and buildings not observing safety standards were pounced upon, said Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman.

Officials from disaster management and emergency services, waste management, environmental health and city planning, together with Home Affairs officials and lawyers for counterfeit goods were involved in the special operation.
Written warnings were issued to buildings not complying with the stipulated safety standards, illegal businesses’ tools and equipment were confiscated, hawkers trading illegally had their goods seized and numerous counterfeit goods and DVDs and CDs were confiscated. Four illegal immigrants were arrested. Fines were also issued to hawkers and mechanics plying their trade illegally.
“Periodical operations of this nature will continue with the objective of cleaning up the town and compelling traders to stringently adhere to the by-laws of the city,” Kgasago said.
