EMPD impounds nearly 80 taxis during special operation

The impounded and discontinued vehicles included two five-ton trucks

SEVENTY-NINE minibus taxis were either impounded or discontinued by the Metro Police, in Tembisa, on Tuesday, during Operation Ke Molao (It’s the Law).

The special operation, under the auspices of Gauteng Province, commenced on Friday, last week, and is aimed at tackling lawlessness on our roads, as well as targeting unroadworthy vehicles.

Lieut Col Wilfred Kgasago, Metro Police spokesman, said the EMPD targeted the Esangweni Taxi Rank, as well as the main roads in Tembisa, namely Andrew Mapheto Drive and Brian Mazibuko Road, between 6am and 2pm.

“The special operation yielded 56 impounded vehicles, with 38 discontinued from using public roads until they have undergone re-testing,” he added.

”The impounded and discontinued vehicles included two five-ton trucks, 13 light motor vehicles and 79 minibuses. Among the minibuses were long distance and local taxis, in the form of Quantums, Siyayas, Ventures and Condors,” Kgasago said.

All the impounded vehicles were taken to the EMPD pound in Kempton Park.

To reclaim their vehicles, owners will have to produce the vehicle’s registration papers, together with identity documents. In addition, vehicles towed away will be liable for a R1 860 towing fee and a charge of R241 a day for storage.
