BEWARE: subway is a hot spot for these crimes

The latest incident took place in peak hour traffic

A resident became the victim of an armed robbery underneath the CR Swart Drive subway on Tuesday evening in peak traffic.

Johann van Wyk shared his experience on social media, saying he was driving from the CBD towards Edleen when the incident happened around 6.30pm.

Two men, one armed, approached him and stole his cellphone, wedding rings and necklace.

He said his window was slightly open and the one guy snatched the phone off his lap.

“I wanted to get out but he shouted at me and cocked his gun. He then took my wedding bands and snatched my necklace off my neck – all of this happened during rush hour,” he said.

“All this while everyone was around but at least I am alive and that is all that matters.”

Spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed that crimes of this nature (smash and grabs) and robbery were reported to them on a weekly basis.

“The CR Swart Drive subway and central business district are both hot spot areas for such crimes. We have had successes in the past where suspects were arrested and convicted of such crimes. From time to time we deploy our members in civilian clothes to man such places,” Mtshali said.

“We are at present planning to again implement the plan of deploying police in civilian clothes in these areas to reduce such incidents. However, we also request the community to heed our

warning and not drive with open windows or valuables in their cars.”
