Massive cocaine seizure at OR Tambo International Airport

Police intercepted 250kg of cocaine worth over R200 million at OR Tambo International Airport on October 25.

A multidisciplinary law enforcement team seized approximately 250kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of more than R200 million, at OR Tambo International Airport on October 25.

The drugs, comprising 216 blocks of cocaine concealed in five luggage bags, were intercepted during a joint operation involving the SAPS, SARS Customs and Border Management Authority (BMA).

National SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the significant seizure demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement operations aimed at disrupting international drug trafficking networks.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola commended the team for its vigilance and professionalism.

He emphasised that SAPS would continue working closely with its law enforcement partners to identify, intercept and dismantle drug trafficking operations using South Africa’s ports of entry.

According to Mathe, the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking through the country’s busiest international airport.

She revealed that 116 suspected drug mules have been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport over the past 24 months.

“These arrests highlight the continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to detect and prevent the transportation of illicit drugs through South Africa’s borders,” said Mathe.

SAPS reiterated its commitment to strengthening border security through continued collaboration with SARS Customs, the BMA and other stakeholders.

The police also reaffirmed their determination to disrupt organised criminal networks and ensure that those involved in the illicit drug trade are brought to justice.
