Driver of hijacked truck missing with its R1-m load

Investigations are underway to locate the missing driver and the two trailers

THE horse of a truck hijacked somewhere between Durban and Johannesburg was recovered in Ivory Park on Wednesday.

However, the two trailers with lubricants worth R1-million destined for BP filling stations in Gauteng, were gone.

Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for Ekurhuleni metro police, said it was suspected that the hijacking took place somewhere in Gauteng between the night of Tuesday, May 24 and the early hours of Wednesday, May 25.

The articulated truck’s horse was found around 11am on Wednesday, abandoned at the intersection of October Road and Freedom Drive at Ivory Park. The driver, as well as the two trailers, which were carrying the consignment, were missing. Keys were found still hanging in the ignition of the white Nissan UD460 truck tractor.

“The description given by the company is that the missing trailers are silver flat decks with grey chassis covered with grey tarps, emblazoned with “SKAR Freight” branding. The registration numbers are ND 651223 and ND651214, Kgasago said.

The discovery was a joint effort of the EMPD Loss Control Unit, SAPS Rapid Response Unit and Cartrak officers.

Investigations are underway to locate the missing driver and the two trailers, as well as the persons responsible for the crime.
