Former guard steals from his Esther Park neighbours

He and six other men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property

A former security guard at an Esther Park complex was nabbed for using his master key to steal from residents in the complex.

Various items were reported stolen at Heronbrook Estate over a period of time, said Sebenza SAPS spokesman, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso.

“We could not figure out what was happening, because there was no forced entry, so it had to be an inside job,” she said.

A woman, whose maroon laptop was stolen at the end of May, called the police and said she suspected a man living in a nearby unit of being the culprit. “We went to the unit on May 30 and when the man opened the door, we saw the maroon laptop on his kitchen counter,” said Tsotsotso.

After further interrogation the man confessed he was a former security guard for the complex and had a master key that allowed him to gain entry to all the units.

He and six other men, five of whom were living in one apartment, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. All the stolen goods, such as laptops, shoes and cellphones, were recovered and given back to their owners.

The suspects are being held at Modderbee Correctional Services in Benoni and will appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
