Gym opened for the elderly

Senior Citizens embark on a healthy lifestyle.

Gauteng’s Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, opened a gym facility for older people in Ivory Park 2 on June 2.

The Ubuntu Senior Citizens Centre in Ivory Park 2 received gym equipment worth R100 000.

Tracksuits for 52 older residents were also purchased.

This was part of a social development initiative for an Active Ageing Programme, aimed at improving the quality of life and introducing a healthy lifestyle for older people.

Gauteng Social Development made provision for recreational opportunities that cater for a healthy lifestyle.

“In total the department is spending R714 598 for the provision of programmes for older persons in Midrand, excluding the funding for the gym equipment,” said MEC Mayathula-Khoza.

The centre is open five days a week and provides a variety of activities, like sewing, bead work, arts and crafts, spiritual motivation, indigenous games, Khari-kude and gym activities.

“The Active Ageing Programme is about older people engaging in recreational activities.

“The gym equipment is for physical exercise but we have also been encouraging them to eat nutritious food, balanced meals and we discouraged them from drinking too much alcohol,” said MEC Mayathula-Khoza.
