Check your health – get tested for breast cancer during #YouthMonth
Did you know that the youngest patient to be diagnosed with breast cancer in South Africa was only 8-years-old?
CANCER and breast cancer in particular, is a very serious illness which affects both women and men.
About 1 in 33 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in South Africa.
But as a young person, you’re probably thinking “Oh well, that kind of stuff won’t happen to me, I’m still young.” Right? Wrong. Breast cancer affects women of all ages.
Did you know that the youngest patient to be diagnosed with breast cancer in South Africa was only eight years old? Yep, scary stuff – but it’s the reality.
Luckily, more and more younger people are catching on.
PinkDrive’s marketing manager Febe Meyer, says they are finding that the younger generation is being far more responsive and is starting to take responsibility for their health.
“Younger people are keen to learn more and come for testing. PinkDrive’s motto is ‘Early detection saves lives’. Thus, the earlier that any abnormality is detected, the treatment options are less harsh and the chances of survival are increased,” Meyer explained.
Well, there you have it – the earlier you test, the more chances you have to survive and fight cancer.
PinkDrive is an NPC (non-profit company) that offers countrywide mobile health services for women’s health and provides them with access to mammography and gynaecology units.
A mammogram is a test done which is used to diagnose breast cancer. It is an X-ray of the breast and uses radiation.
All PinkDrive units travel to semi-urban and urban areas around South Africa with the aim of enabling all medically uninsured access to women’s health services. These services include free education on women’s health, free mammograms, free pap smears, free clinical examinations and education on how to do breast self-examinations.
To date, PinkDrive has provided more than 9 900 mammograms, conducted more than 95 000 clinical breast examinations and educated more than 233 000 people on breast health.
PinkDrive will visit a few areas around Ekurhuleni where they offer women and men free mammograms to test for breast cancer. Check out the dates and venues below and go get your free test.
