If you follow these easy three-step way to celebrate Youth Day, you will feel fulfilled and relaxed
ARE you looking forward to a long weekend with friends and family because of the public holiday coming up on June 16?
The thing is, some of us forget that its actually Youth Day and that it stands for something. Youth Day commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings which occurred in Johannesburg in 1976.
With this in mind you can do these simple three steps to celebrate Youth Day as well as Youth Month:
Step one: Go back in the past
Educate your children on what Youth Day is about and visit a piece of heritage by going to the Hector Pieterson museum in Soweto not far from where the the protest happened.

Step two: Celebrate now, the present
If Soweto is too far for you to travel you can stay in the Ekurhuleni area and be a part of one of the following events:
– Go to Emperors Palace and stand a chance to win a Big Boy Mustang 250 motorbike plus your share of R50 000 in cash and FreePlay by playing slots and tables. Play until June 14 to qualify for a draw ticket. Fifteen points equals one ticket. The lucky draw will be on June 16 at 8pm.
– A fun family picnic will be hosted on June 16 from 11am to 3pm at the OR Tambo Precinct in Wattville hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni and Sibikwa Arts Centre. There will be music, drama, dance and poetry, drumming circles and loads of entertainment for children and parents.
– On June 18 and 19 C9ine Projects and Ohape Events presents the Youth Pop-Up Festival in association with KasiKomm Lifestyle and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The event starts at 10am and will be hosted at the Vosloorus Stadium. The event will promote township economic values, showcasing diversity and bringing together the various entrepreneurial cultures from all Ekurhuleni communities. Tickets are between R120 and R300.
– The Youth Excellence Awards will be hosted on June 18 by mayor Mondli Gungubele at Germiston Civic Centre to recognise the youth excellence and activism in social development, sport, business and life skills.

– And on June 25 more than 10 000 young people are expected to attend the 40th Youth Uprising Music Festival at the Change Bible Church in Katlehong.
Step three: Relax
Whatever you decide to do, make sure you take some time to just relax. Visit a nice restaurant or go to a small game reserve close to you or just relax at home.
