School gets transformed for Mandela Day
"P&G is humbled by Mandela’s impressive legacy and his selfless commitment to the people of South Africa."
Members of Procter & Gamble (P&G) joined the Nelson Mandela Foundation and former First Lady Graca Machel to launch Mandela Day for 2016.
The launch took place on Thursday, June 9.
At the launch event, P&G employees assisted in creating a more conducive learning environment for the children at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Tembisa by participating in a number of activities.”P&G is humbled by Mandela’s impressive legacy and his selfless commitment to the people of South Africa. As a company, we aim to honour his ideals daily through the way we conduct business. We also have social responsibility initiatives such as the Always Keeping Girls in School Programme,” said Khululiwe Mabaso, the CSI Associate Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at P&G.
Each of the activities during the launch event at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School highlighted the pillars of the Mandela Day initiative, which are Education and Literacy, Food Security, Shelter and the Environment.
P&G employees and other volunteers read to the children, helped to establish a garden at the school, painted the buildings and supported recycling initiatives run by the youth.
P&G also sponsored the paint for the school and bookshelves for the library.
“We at the Nelson Mandela Foundation are once again asking South Africa to take action and inspire change. With each year, we try to find ways to make the initiative more accessible and impactful for the beneficiaries, as well as the NGOs, corporates and individuals who commit to making a difference on Mandela Day,” said Yase Godlo, the manager of Mandela Day at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
