Local schools receive technological boost

The compujectors are built in Bedfordview by a South African company and then purchased by MTN for installation at various schools.

On June 1, MTN handed over R38 000 worth of compujectors to six needy schools after working in partnership with the Original Mathematics Initiative (OMI).

The handover was made by Angie Maloka, the senior manager of education and communication programmes at the MTN SA Foundation, and her teams.

Among the schools are Liverpool which is based in Actonville and Bokamoso, Tembisa High, Ingqayizivele, Thuto-Ke-matla and Zitikeni Secondary Schools.

According to the founder of the OMI, Mr Kahlil Malik Muhammad, the total gift amounted to R228 000 and was the result of an email that he sent to MTN after they rejected the idea of funding his organisation directly.

“For MTN to help my schools, directly, I am eternally grateful,” he said.

“As a rule, MTN sponsors schools in rural areas but them made an exception for us,” said Mr Muhammad.

Officials from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Benoni district, Lucky Maphele and Kagiso Mogaswane, were present as well as principals and representatives from the chosen schools.

Schalk Coetzee, of Lesedi Corporate, has scheduled training for July 29 with respect to the units.

The compujectors are mobile smartboards and are internet compatible, with 500 gigabytes of memory.

They have books, topics and presentations on every subject taught in the syllabus, plus the entire Microsoft package.

Skype is installed and they have two cameras.

MTN does not classify the gift as a sponsorship, but rather as an investment in each school.

The schools that benefited will work closely with Schalk and the various principals to ensure the units are put to good use in the schools.
