Teen (17) bags big art award
Apart from being an outstanding artist, Philip is also an excellent air rifle shot
A 17-year-old Aston Manor teenager has won a prestigious art award at the annual National Eisteddfod of SA (NEA) competition.
Philip Haussamer, a student at The Sketch Art Studio, in Edleen, was named the Best Senior Artist in the NEA 4th Young Artist Award 2016 Competition, on May 21.
The NEA in Randburg holds an annual eisteddfod in visual art, drama, music and dance. Students from various public and private schools, from art and dance studios, are entered into the eisteddfod.
The youngsters who receive a diploma level of 90 per cent and above in the eisteddfod go through to an annual competition called the Young Artist of the Year Award. This was their fourth year running the competition and Philip is their fourth winner.
The painting that won him the award is called Seviroth’s Freedom from Daniel’s Body and is based on an animé on which he has been working.
This Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Kempton Park has been painting since he was only nine years old and his preferred medium is acrylic paint.
Apart from being an outstanding artist, Philip is also an excellent air rifle shottist. He is currently the South African Air Rifle Association (SAARA) Champion for the 3P, as well as the 10M events.
He has won numerous medals for target shooting since he embarked on the sport in 2013. He also improved the 10M national senior and junior target shooting record during the SAARA Gauteng Open, in May. The previous record was set in September 2006.
Does he have any future plans for his art? He would love, as a hobby, to create animations, together with his twin brother, Tiaan.
