The occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash

According to William Ntladi, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, it is believed there was a high speed chase between a white Mercedes Benz and the police, whereby the sedan crashed into the back of the taxi full of passengers, forcing the taxi to roll over before landing on its roof.

Four patients were declared dead on the scene, while one was critically injured and airlifted to hospital. Eight others sustained serious injuries and were transported to various hospitals, Ntladi added.

The occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash.

The freeway was partially closed while Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Services were on the scene.
