The official handover of school shoes was done last Wednesday, by MMC for Public Safety Sello Lemao, who was accompanied by his deputy director, Eazy Gaompotse. Ms Edna Mamonyane, spokesperson for JMPD, acted as programme director at the event.

Also in attendance were members of the community, Disaster Management of the City of Joburg, SAPS, local councillors and representatives from Region A Municipality.

Speaking at the event, Mr Lemao said, “This donation seeks to advance the challenges faced by many of our pupils at our city region. This also demonstrate that we are a caring city but this wouldn’t be possible if members of the community were not involved.”

“During our old school days we used to go school barefoot but those times are gone. There is no reason for them to suffer. These children are our future. We want them to grow up in a healthy environment. We are going to go all out to get more sponsors to support this initiative,” he told those present.

The school principal, Tabitha Khulima said, “We are thankful for the donation made to us. Our children are now going to enjoy wearing their new school shoes. It will also help to redeem their self-esteem and also enhance their school performance. It will help to uplift their spirits to succeed in education.”

Grade 6 learner, Tshegofatso Makola recited a poem in Sepedi to the delighted guests.

The event ended with school pupils entertaining the guests by singing and dancing.
